One question that I have for you is what products if any should a natural avoid during the summer months? I absolutely LOVE Shea Moisture's products. The Curl Enhancing Smoothie and their Deep Treatment Masque are staples of mine. I like that their products are all natural and are free of harsh chemicals. I would definitely love to get my hands on this prize. Here's hoping....:)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Hi MusiQ!

Thanks for your entry! Rather than giving you a list of products to avoid, lets look a the types of products and ingredients that that are helpful in the summer days. The key to the summer for a Natural Beauty is to keep your curls managed and out of the way. For the summer, we recommend shampooing less. Instead, co-wash (conditioner wash). Summer humidity can make your hair cuticle swell, causing it to look frizzy. Heavier conditioners work well in the summer. We both use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Smooth-n-Hold Pudding (this can be found at Wal-Mart). Elle typically uses Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioning repair cream in the summer, but is currently addicted to Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie! MoJo uses Aussie Deep 3 Minute Miracle Moisture Treatment. Although this is not a leave- in, MoJo likes the hold and control of this product when left on her hair.

Basically you want a product that is in a pudding or cream form. Serums and pomades are also great for control, and of course gels (Elle use the Eco Styler Gels, but less in the summer). Although many Naturals are against them, shampoos with silicones are good for smoothing down the hair cuticle as well.

Summer heat and UV rays from the sun can make your hair dry and brittle. Cover your hair, braid or twist it, or be sure to use leave-in conditioners to protect your hair from the sun. If you’re swimming, be sure to wash the chlorine out of your beautiful tresses as soon as possible.

One more piece of advice we have to offer is to consider avoiding products with intense fragrances. Sweet and fruity smells can attract mosquitoes, gnats, and bees, so if you’re going to be outside a lot, consider using products with softer smells.

Thanks for the comment and be sure to tell all your friends about Inside Outside Natural Beauty!

Since the summer started coconut oil leaves my hair crunchy and dry, can you tell me why? I love Shea Moisture's Deep Treatment Masque as a leave-in, it leaves my hair soft and moisturized; I really want to try the Coconut & Hibiscus line.

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Hi Shana!

What other products do you use in conjunction with your coconut oil? It could be a number of things making your hair crunchy. It could be that your coconut oil is not working well with your shampoo or conditioner, or that your using too much of the oil. We know some people deal with crunchy hair after oiling in the summertime, and we honestly don’t know why.

So what can you do?

Try a different oil. Coconut oil may just not work well with your hair texture and levels of moisture in the summer heat. Try jojoba, or tea tree oil. Another tip that we found helpful, is if your hair feels crunchy, try spritzing it with water.

Another theory we found, with a little research, is your hair may have low porosity. An article describing what low porosity means, and how to deal with it can be found at: http://derbycitynaturals.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/tips-for-low-porosity-naturals/

Hi my curl pattern up front likes to act like its still permed and I think its from heat damage. Is there any way to get that curl pattern back??

I like Shea Moisture and have tried both lines but not the shampoo or conditioner in either. Love the Coconut & Hibiscus because it really brings my curl out :)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Hi SuccessfulBeauty!

Unfortunately, if you indeed do have heat damage there is no way to repair it. But there are a few tricks that work for some. I read an article somewhere a while back that said you can try and hydrate your extremely dry hair, caused by too much heat or chemicals (texturizers and relaxers) by soaking the affected areas in water. I also found remedies that called for soaking the hair in conditioner, mainly deep conditioners. But if the damage is too extensive, and the cuticle is in fact MELTED, then nothing can be done to save it.

But not all is lost. After some research, we also found remedies that called for styling and handling damaged hair. These you can do until you wrap your mind around chopping the burnt hair off, or until you get some new growth to cushion the blow. Many of these techniques are the same techniques women, such as Elle, that have more than one hair texture use to style their hair. This includes using different products on the heat damaged hair, than on your healthier hair. Products that promise curl definition and hydration are great, as well as activators. You can also style your hair with rollers or even pin curls in the top to give you a curl.

I found a list of 6 remedies for heat damaged at Black Hair Information.com that states:

To control major heat damaged hair until you are ready to trim the damaged hair you will need:

1. A strong protein treatment every 6 weeks to impart strength to the hair and curb the breakage. Try Aphogee two step protein treatment or Nexxus Emergencee.

2. Weekly deep conditioning treatments to keep the hair moisturized.

3. A protein rich diet to ensure that new hair grows healthy.

4. Avoid heat tools and choose heat-free methods to straighten the hair.

5. A reassessment of hair goals – e.g. colour options or necessity of a relaxer for your hair type

6. Regular trims to remove the damaged hair

Last but not least… why don’t you try braid outs and twist outs? This could be a double positive seeing as how they are protective styles, and the braiding and twisting will give you a curl pattern that is the same all the way around.

Thank you for your comment and entry into this contest. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to email us at IOBCurls@gmail.com or continue to comment. Thanks for your support, be sure to tell all of your friends about Inside Outside Natural Beauty, and be blessed!!

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Hi Jenn,

We LOVE the fact that we now have a fan :)

Luckily for you, we are on budgets as well haha!

Most of the products that we review, giveaway, and are MOST knowledgeable about at this time are very affordable. This, of course, may change if we were to be offered products to test, review, and giveaway. But contrary to popular belief, there are many good products that can be found at Walgreens and Wal-Mart that are very affordable. Pantene, Suave, Herbal Essences, TREsemmé, Garnier Fructis, and Aussie are just a few of the many products that have a curly hair line that can be found at stores like Wal-Mart and Walgreens. Shea Moisture and Twisted Sista can be found at Walgreens, and Target sells KinkyKurly (although KK is more on the expensive side). In our experience, the products that tend to be more expensive are the products with shorter ingredients lists, and those ingredients tend to be more natural. The cheaper product lines listed above tend to have longer product lists, with the exception of Shea Moisture, and contain a few arguably bad ingredients such as sulfates. But the quality of these products, we believe are based solely on person opinion. We both LOVE Herbal Essences Totally Twisted and Aussie Moist. We truly believe in Natural Beauties using what products work for them! And keep in mind, not all natural hair loves the more expensive lines. For example: Elle’s hair doesn’t particularly like MixedChicks and Garnier Fructis products.

Girl, revive your hair!! Get a routine (we will both be updating you all with our nightly, weekly and monthly routines very soon) and deep condition your hair WEEKLY to bring it back to life. Hydration is vital, and try some protective styling such as twists or bunning.
Going natural and being a Natural Beauty can be hard and discouraging, and support can sometimes be hard to find. That’s why we are here! We use each other and you guys to be our support, and we are your support too. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email us at IOBCurls@gmail.com or continue to comment.

Thanks for the love, remember to tell all your friends about Inside Outside Natural Beauty. Good luck!

Hello! I'm a new subbie. I was wondering whether glycerin is safe to use during both in summer and winter? I recently tried it and it seems to make my hair softer yet frizzier. Thank you :)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Welcome pianoartist18, and thank you for following.

When researching a little more about glycerin, we found some interesting information. To sum it all up:

Glycerin is "a highly effective moisturizer and humectant for skin and hair. Its thick viscosity and high boiling point are what make it an effective curl-definer and frizz minimizer (in the right climate)." It has a "high molecular density of hydrophilic groups makes it an extremely hygroscopic molecule that absorbs water from its surrounding environment" which is good when the glycerin is DILUATED. BUT "If it were applied to hair in such a concentrated state" meaning, the state that you buy it in at the store, "it could strip all of the moisture from the interior of the hair.", thus giving you the opposite outcome than what your looking for.
“However, when used in a diluted form, glycerin can be a great moisturizer... Care should be taken to use it in environments of moderate humidity. If the climate is very hot and humid, glycerin will absorb a lot of moisture from the air and cause the hair to swell, raising the cuticle and disrupting curl pattern, creating coarse, frizzy hair. In weather that is extremely dry, glycerin will seek out moisture from your hair and actually dehydrate it, which can cause damage and breakage.”

So…
Basically, if you’re using glycerin in the summer or in dry weather at all, mix it with something else, such as a leave-in and an oil. But do NOT just rub glycerin on your hands, and coat your hair with it. (Elle is guilty of this )
“Do not use glycerin right after using a permanent dye on the hair, and consider avoiding it if you use semi-permanent or red color on your hair.” So let’s just say Elle can’t use glycerin anymore, because her hair dye is permanent AND red. Smh
Thank you so much for visiting, following, and entering. Be sure to tell all your friends about Inside Outside Natural Beauty.

Hi,

I subscribed via Feedburner. My natural hair question/comment is that I would like to see more options/styles for natural hair ladies that are short on time. I'm at the length in between TWA and BAA. Twists take so long to do and only last me a week before they become really frizzy. I'm tempted to go back to a TWA, but I really don't want to. Or tips on getting my twists to last longer would be helpful too!

I haven't tried the Shea Moisture line yet, but I've been wanting to try the Moisture Retention Shampoo.

Thanks for the contest,

I would like to know what products to use on my 4b textured hair to keep it shiny without being too greasy. I did the big chop 3 weeks ago and that is the only problem I seem to be having. I love my look in the morning, but by 2pm, my hair seems dry.

I am currently using the Organic Raw Shea Butter Line of Shea Moisture products and would love to try the Coconut & Hibiscus line.

hi one question that I have is are mineral oils really that bad for the hair. I'm a broke high school student and almost every product at the local BSS has it. Trying to make my own styler at home simply doesn't work and the online products are inaccessible without a credit card so I feel stuck. Do any of you still use products that contain some of the bad ingredients.

Also I would love to try the curl enhancing smoothie to see if I could wear my hair in a wash and go this summer.

I am interested in the Curl and Shine kit because I do have a nice curl pattern going on that I would love to enhance and nurture. With that being said, I am ALSO transitional, my curls stood up to the perm I received about a year ago so I did not big chop. I am interested in the transitioning kit as well. I hope I get the chance to try either of these!

Hi AshasMom!

Question:: What products do you use for your twist outs? Do you use braid outs? You should use products that provide moisture and conditioning while also giving you a little bit of hold. Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie is an example of this. This is what I use when I do braid outs. I put a little bit on each braid as well as some tea tree oil. Be sure to let it dry completely (if doing a wet/damp twist/braid out), this should also cut down on frizz.

Also, how are you preserving your TO/BO? This is very important. You should either put on a scarf/bonnet, or even re-braid/twist your hair. You do not have to braid it exactly the way your original braids were. You could group more of them together. For example, when I do braid outs I typically begin with 12 or so braids, but when re-braiding for preservation, I only do 6 or so braids.

I hope this helps!

Good luck, and thanks for entering. Be sure to tell all your friends about Inside Outside Natural Beauty :)

Good Morning Tameka.Brown99!

When doing a little research, I found overwhelming praise for Qhemet Biologics products for 4b beauties. Others that I have found are Miss Jessie’s product lines as well as Shea Moisture. There are a few websites that offer homemade leave in conditioner recipes. A good one I found includes 1 part Aloe Vera Juice, 1 part water, and 1 part conditioner (Kimmaytube from youtube). Also, are you sealing your ends with an oil? This can help you retain moisture as well as shine. Serums are also great for shine.

Thanks for your question and entry. Good luck! :)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

You are asking a question that I once asked myself. And the answer isn’t simple. Many curlies think of mineral oils as the spawn of Satan. But the truth of the matter is, Mineral oils are bad for you hair for the same reasons we gave that glycerin is bad for your hair. It coats the follicles, with out letting any moisture through, thereby pulling moisture from your hair. This will cause dryness, and therefore lead to breakage.

But many products contain mineral oils under the code name petroleum as well as names like paraffinum liquidum. But contrary to popular belief, there are some cheaper products that don’t have all the bad ingredients. For example: the Shea Moisture line this giveaway is for. Most of the full sized bottles are around $9.99 and you don’t use that much of it.
And YES YES YES. Mojo and I do use products that contain some bad ingredients. I love Shea Moisture for my braid outs, but I have staple products such as my Aussie Moist, and Herbal Essences and many other brands that have a few of these “bad” ingredients. It’s all about what works for YOUR hair.

Thanks for your question!

Anytime we are happy to help, if you have any questions feel free to email us at IOBCurls@gmail.com or simply comment on any post.
Good Luck!

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Good Morning Demetra,

We both are what would be considered normal porosity, with medium-coarse texture.

Thanks for your entry, and good luck!

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Evelyn.n.alfred,

Both of us are 3c with Elle having a little 3b in the front.

This is not my staple product for W-N-Gs, but the results are beautiful. I just find that when I use this product for a WNGs, I add some Eco Styler gel, otherwise, it dries big (which sometimes I want) but is not really preservable for second day hair (I typically like to get 3rd-4th day hair from a W-N-G)! So i use it more for styling my hair, or the Raw Shea Butter & Argan Oil Deep Treatment Masque as a deep conditioner.

Thanks for your question! Good Luck! Be sure to tell all your friends about IONB!

Raquel,

Good Question!!! I have a GRANIOSE theory about weave and naturals, your question speaks specifically about using weaves to grow your hair out… do you mean while transitioning? Or simply to gain a healthy length? Excuse me if I am long winded in my response, but in my opinion, this is a big deal.

Ok… ready? Here goes…

I personally have NOTHING against weave whether it be braids and twists, or tracks and sew-ins, but I don’t think it’s smart for transitioners to use weave for the purpose of growing your relaxer out… and let me tell you why.

Here is a scenario: Becky wants to go natural, but has just started and doesn’t really know how to deal with relaxed ends, and a few inches of natural hair. So she keeps her hair braided throughout the whole transitioning process. Well now it’s a year later, and Becky has seen much growth, the damaged, relaxed ends are now the minority, and she is ready to rock her natural hair. But there is one huge problem. Because Becky hasn’t had to deal with her hair, she doesn’t know what products work with her hair, and what products don’t. She doesn’t know how to style her natural hair, or what to do with it. It’s uneven, and like a foreign object she’s never seen before. She is also not comfortable rocking a TWA seeing as how for the entire year before she has had long braids or a silky smooth sew-in. She also gets mixed reactions from friends, family, and co-workers because her change was so drastic and quick. She has no other choice but to go back to the creamy crack (relaxer).

Y’all may think I’m exaggerating, but I have seen this happen too many times. Those of us, in my experience, that transitioned with out weave (and I mean constant weave of some sort, not every now and again getting some braids) learn by trial and error, and therefore tend to be better off in the long run. This also tends to be the same for people that go from relaxers to constant straightening/flat ironing while transitioning. When you are done with the transition, you have no other choice but to keep flat ironing your hair, or go back to the perm (unless you have an easier texture to work with). The heat can be just as damaging, if not worse, than the relaxer.

Yes its true that beauticians and stylists are there to help, but I have never gone to the beauty shop with my natural hair and gotten a better result than what I can do at home (unless I go to get a blow out and trim), in fact, this is the only time in which I have experienced heat damage!

If you’re talking about using weave simply to gain length, as in, I’m already natural, but I want to use braids and other types of weaves as a protective style SURE! But one thing… BE SURE to give your hair a break in between styles and PLEASE be sure to keep your hair MOISTURIZED! If you do not, your hair will become dry and brittle and you will have breakage that defeats the purpose of the weave all together.

But everyone is different, and this is just my opinion. So take it for the grain of salt that its worth. LOL

GREAT question!!

Good Luck!
-Elle

Hi theprfktangel

We just answered a similar question for Raquel, but to sum it up…

Those of us, in my experience, that transitioned with out heat (and I mean constant flat ironing) learn by trial and error, and therefore tend to be better off in the long run. When you are done with the transition, you have no other choice but to keep flat ironing your hair, or go back to the perm (unless you have an easier texture to work with). The heat can be just as damaging, if not worse, than the relaxer.

So in short, when I transitioned, I did use heat from time to time to control my edges when I had only a few inches of new growth, but after a certain amount of time I noticed my edges thinning, and decided to style my relaxed ends to look more like my roots as opposed to the opposite.

I hope this answers your question!
Thanks for your entry!!

Do you seal your ends with a natural oil of some sort after moisturizing/conditioning? If not, try doing so by buying a natural oil such a tea tree oil or jajoba and putting a little bit on your ends after applying your conditioner :)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

Zblue_tbn,

YES! Shea oil does exist. It is a by-product of shea butter when it is heated. It is a lighter moisturizer than the butter. Shea oil only gives you half the by-product of the butter (fractionated opposed to fractionated and unfractionated as with the butter).

Hey IONBeauties!!! I have been completely natural for 2 years and transitioned for 3 months. Amazingly in this time I have NEVER done two-strand twists on my hair. EVER. It's always been wash n' go's. For the summer though I wanted to start protective styling so with the help of the Naturally Obsessed blog I have put my Curlies in 2 strand twists, layering each with a little moisturizer and shea butter. I've had them in for about 4 days and my scalp is itching like crazy!!! I've used shea butter before with no problem and normally wash my hair every week so having these twists in for 4 days without any water touching them shouldn't be foreign to my scalp. However, I do question if maybe there is a product build-up problem going on? Do you happen to know the particular signs of it.....I've never really dealt with it before, but alas I can't think of any other explanations? As far as the Shea Moisture line, amazingly I've never used it but after looking at their website, reading the ingredients, AND seeing that you can get it at Walgreens, I will definitely be trying the Raw Shea Butter Deep Treat Masque. It looks SIMPLY AWESOME!!! Thanks Luvs!!! :o)

Inside Outside Natural Beauties said...

UniqCurlyGurl,

Thanks for your question... it could very well be product build up if you used too much product. you can try and preserve your twists by cleansing you sclap with some tea tree oil. Just take a small size and dip the tips of your fingers in the oil. Massage the oil into your scalp. It feels amazing btw :)

ALSO... we would LOVE to see, and showcase pictures of your twists. If your interested, shoot us an email at IOBCurls@gmail.com.
